Technology

Many of my new piecing of technology came to me when my parents felt I was old enough and responsible enough to handle it. Technology has had a crucial impact on my life. Or more accurately my progression with technology has greatly impacted my literacy in some good ways and some extremely bad ways.
The summer of seventh grade I received my first cellular device. In some ways I believe that it had an adverse effect on my literacy. Although it helped me become a faster at typing; I became so used to using improper spelling such as “u” instead of “you.” It became second nature for me to use slang instead of correct grammar. My first time writing an essay on the computer following receiving a cell phone my essay was riddled with mistakes. After that I tried to text using proper English. It was hard and I almost always found myself texting whatever way was fastest and easiest. Looking back on it I wish I had spent more time trying to fix my lazy habits. Then the Christmas of my freshman year I received a lap top. The lap top helped me gain some independence. It became much easier for me to work on school projects and essays. It became quite an advantage given that the work load in high school increased dramatically from middle school. However it has had negative effects on my work ethic. The internet is plagued with distractions. It forced me to become an excellent procrastinator. I usually take many breaks when trying to write an AP lit essay to view other websites. This makes an hour long project a two day project.
And in my most recent increase in the step ladder of technology is when I upgraded my phone to a smart phone. My smart phone has made it much easier to research topics for school. And unlike my first cell phone it has started to increase my caliber of spelling due to auto correct. It shows me the correct way to spell. And still it is increasing my typing abilities I’m at approximately 60 words in five minutes now. It is also a major distraction. I find myself on my phone more then I have ever been. I’m convinced it is causing me to lose my eye site. However everyone in my family has glasses I suppose it was just a matter of time before I had to get some of my own. It causes me to stay up late impeding my performance in school as well as in sports.
Technology has helped to shape my literacy to this day. Technology has helped my literacy in some good and some bad ways. It has increased my typing speed. It has also helped somewhat in my spelling ability. However because I show very little self control I have a hard time regulating myself causing many wasted sleepless nights.
