Experiences with Literature

It’s hard to explain my first acts of literacy, for I was still in my infant stages of life. What I know is based purely off what my parents have told me. As a child I was very curious. I learned to run before I could walk. However I struggled a bit with my reading; I did not pick it up quite as fast as most kids. Which as you can imagine is hard being the child of an English teacher. In school I was always separated from the other kids during reading time. I was escorted to a separate room where I had to learn to read by myself. I was even asked to go to summer school following my first year of school. Part of the problem I believe is I am one of the youngest kids in my grade if not the youngest. As my time at Duzine came to an end I started to read much higher above my grade level. Even to this day I am a horrific speller. To that I blame my father for poor spelling genetics. However I continue my quest for a higher form of Literacy.
One novel that has really helped me on my ever long quest is The Hunger Games. I fully recommend it to everyone. For one this novel helped me receive an excellent grade on the English regents. Also this novel helped me come to realize there were novels out there that could really keep me interested and wanting to read more. Prior to picking this book up I had not read in a while, nothing seemed to interest me, in terms of novels of course. This novel inspired me to want to read more. After reading this novel I did not only finish this series but I completed two others within a year. This novel helped shape my modern outlook on my literacy.
This novel was also recently made into a movie; a movie unlike others that follows the book almost exactly on point. Obviously I was not the only person affected by this novel. It was so popular that a field trip was put together to watch this movie! I for one did not see it as to not waste precious instruction however I did attend the movie at a later date. I firmly recommend this movie to anyone who has not read this novel.
My first experiences as a reader were plagued with struggle. I was separated from my classmates because I wasn’t at the level of reading as my peers and almost attended summer school for that very reason. This was obviously very discouraging and I would not find my inspiration to read again until I picked up The Hunger Games. This proved not only to be an inspiration to myself but many other people who have had the pleasure of reading it.
